As FRP has said, SAND.

I lived in the Gulf for 10 years and learnt what sand means.

So, for example, when there's a dust storm, as there often is, you find sand in the butter ... in its snap-close container ... in the fridge ... in a triple-glazed, air-conditioned apartment.

But it's not any old Blackpool sand. Oh, no. It's as fine as graphite dust. Sadly, however, it ain't a lubricant, but a super-abrasive.

Actually driving in a dust storm will strip leading-edge paint to metal and abrade lights & windscreen in minutes. (Some people use car-bras for long journeys, but the glassware suffers, anyway.)

And just being in the Gulf puts sand in places in a car that it really, really, really doesn't need or want.

So, would I import a car from the Gulf? Er ... mmm ... ah ... nah, not really.

Exporting a car to the Gulf would be an act of cruelty.
 
I did

I imported my LHD 993 Targa into the UK from Dubai. none of it is that difficult although the company I used took a fair amount of time to do it, mainly as I was no longer resident in Dubai and finally had to go back there to do the paperwork.

All the comments about sand are true enough but I would not wory about it.

Mine left the factory and went straight to Lebanon - stayed there for 7 years for which I have service history - it then moved to Dubai and no service history. I bought it with 165,000 km on the clock - lots of service-able parts needed work, paint was poor so had a respray and the roof is knackered but well on its way to being fixed.

Engine runs like a dream despite 20 years in the desert.

LHD not an issue for me as we plan to spend a fair bit of time in France when I can give up work and get the car out of storage.

If you want to make a bit of money, buy it and sell it straight away in Europe. The money you get put into a UK car.

Sand, lights, interior, service, MOT, Insurance for non uk vehicle & possibly way more all tot the price increase.

If you have friends living in Europe, I'd have it delivered to them. Ask them to get it roadworthy & sell for that particular country.

Buy a car that you can keep and are happy with :thumb:
 
I live in Dubai and have owned a 996 Turbo for the past 18 months. It has full and extensive service history at the dealer and Alex Renner Motors who are considered to be the best independent in Dubai (JZM are in Abu Dhabi). Bought mine at the exchange rate of the time for £12.5k with it needing some cosmetic and mechanical work which prob cost another £3k. Outstanding value. Car was cheap as it was a manual and most want auto out here. This very much works in the enthusiasts favour.

I'd definitely consider buying a car from here to bring back to the UK. OK they are LHD but that just makes it feel more exotic or you could easily sell it to a French or German. They look at UK eBay and auto trader for cars as they are so much cheaper in the UK than on the continent for certain models, although I think the 996 turbo is approx the same. Mate of mine sold his rhd RX7 to a German chap. Dubai cars can be well maintained as the service intervals are lower. It's also rare for them to be used in track. You simply buy one with full history and get it inspected at the five or so decent Porsche independent specialists out here. Generally, once a new generation of car comes out the previous generation becomes pretty cheap. Cars over 10 years old can't get fully comp ins easily so they really tend to drop off in value. Although there is an insurer trying to offer fully comply which should go through soon.

Comments about sand are over stated. Yes, dust does get into the engine bay but it is easily wiped down and I know of nobody that has had any sort of mechanical issue as a result of this. Nothing gets through an air filter and, as said, they are changed more regularly. Cars parked out in the sun can become sun damaged but lots of cars are garages or in underground parking. In fact, getting bodywork and interior work done here is way cheaper thank uk because of cheap labour.

The exchange rate is currently against you if you are spending sterling as the dollar is quite strong against the pound. That being said, there are still bargains. The 996 turbos have dried up now but 997 turbos have been on dubizzle (classifieds site) for 150k aed. GT4's for 350k aed and 991 GT3's for 380k.seen 997 GT3's for 250k but not really been looking lately. However, I did see a nice 996.1 GT3 CS for 200k recently. When I first got here in 2012 the bargains were amazing but seem to have formed up a little recently. Noticed 997.1's are down to 70k and 997.2 PDK's are 130k.

I'll definitely bring my turbo back with me but the advantage for me is that if hold on to it 6 months after returning I will avoid VAT.

BTW, more than happy to help anyone wanting to look at a car out here.

Presumably those prices you quote for GT3 are Dinar or are they USD?
