993 air con repair

Update: Car back from JAZ with exchange a/c compressor (£450 + VAT ) labour and re-gas (£115+ VAT). All good. Technician explained condenser would need doing "in a couple of years" and that he "can't remember doing an evaporator". I'm happy - nice cool dry air.

Got mine booked in for a new evaporator on the 27th June at Revolution Porsche. I've been quoted £650 + VAT including expansion valve. Hope this cures it, I changed everything else myself last year but still had a sweaty trip down to Angouleme. Hope to be cool this year !

That sounds remarkably cheap for an evaporator, are you sure you don't mean new condenser fitted :dont know:

Nope , new evaporator. I replaced the condenser last year. They are quoting 5 hours labour, £206 for the condenser, £40.95 for the expansion valve, £54 re-gas, couple of O rings, total actually less than i said, £546.92 + VAT

I hope you have fixed the price as it will them 5 hours to strip it down, putting it all back together :hand:

Whenever you break into the A/C system you should always replace the Desiccator/dryer. Was £37.54 (discounted 15%) + VAT last year.
In total I was quoted an estimated £1,500 last year to replace the Evaporator, expansion valve and dryer, so did it myself as the labour is by far the largest factor. Very pleased to have carried it out successfully but blankets etc. to protect the wings did not prevent me putting 3 dents in them as I hopped in an out of the front

Collected car today from Revollution Porsche, new evaporator fitted, icy cold air con at last. And done in 5 hours as quoted.

Great that all's well. For any one else needing a new compressor. I can recommend https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-93-94-Compressor-Clutch-Denso/dp/B00ACDDQWE

It was a tip from another poster on here can't remember who but thanks any way. Been on 6 months and running perfectly. Fitted by OPC who said it was indistinguishable from official Porsche part, fraction of the cost too.

Cheers :thumb:

What temperature should the air con blow at on full output? Im seeing 11 degrees with outside temp at 18 degrees.

11 degrees is about normal. I often see 7-9 degrees C measured at the dashboard vent opening.
Measure temperature at vent opening, 20 deg C ambient, hot engine, no sunshine, resirc on, min temp and max fan. (or Max A/C button pressed) Let the system run like this for some time to allow for proper recycling of the air in the cabin.

If your A/C compressor clutch is cycling with 10-30 seconds intervals in 20 deg C ambient, you have a working A/C system. If you still do not get cold temperatures, you probably have a defective mixer flap servo or two, allowing for heated air flow from the engine.
Cheers,
Tore

a/c sill pipes

Mine failed twice. 2nd time because TSB was not followed by indie and existing corrosion remnants abraded the new pipe, aluminium oxide is a very good abrasive.
Loads of TSBs on pcar site very kindly posted by Geolab.

took the plung with my AC

My AC hans't worked for the two years I've had the car, and i finally took the plunge to read up and have a look. (40 degree heat in France last year encouraged me!)
First thing i discovered, was my AC is aftermarket, although fitment included the right HVAC controller with the AC buttons and wiring, so probably quite a bit was spent fitting it. A lot of the time a separate button is installed.

A trip to alpinair and testing showed the system was empty and the condenser is rotten.
After vacuum testing and re-gassing, the compressor and pipework seem good, as does the evaporator, which being aftermarket, is copper so should not rot so easily.
the system now has uv died gas and oil in it and the ac works as expected, but i will take the plunge and get the condenser changed.

I also used Tore B's excellent web pages to check out that all the buttons and servos etc where working properly, which they all were apart from the footwell flap controls, which did not work.
Tore's guide suggested these servos can go, but you might get a temp fix by giving them a tap.
So i removed the cover at the back of the frunk to have a look. To my surprise, I found the servo did work, but the articulation arm attaching it to the flap had come off.
I put it back on, but it fell off again, so have now applied judicious some blu tack to the holder and it seems to be staying in place and all the flaps and AC work. Hooray!
Hopefully this will be made long lasting by replacing the condenser.
Feeling pretty satisfied, at using the resources on here and Tore's site with a bit of specialist help to get to the bottom of it.

Chaps,

I dig this topic and it's something I'm going to have to tackle when commissioning my car later this year.

So a couple of questions, as part of my rebuild I'll have to remove the fuel tank to remove any old fuel, so whilst there should I replace the evaporator whilst there?, if yes where best to source?.

Also, I think I'll might as well swap the condenser, can't remember what shape it's in to be honest.

it will certainly need a new drier to as the system has been open.

Any pointers appreciated,

Cheers
Trev
