That is a terrible review for a modern Porsche.
Our Cayenne PCP reaches the decision point early next year and our OPC is pushing us quite hard to take a test drive in the new 718 as a new car option, but it leaves me completely cold. The base car does not interest me, and I think the S is just too expensive- I got one to £70k pretty easily on the configurator, and I'm afraid at that money my mind begins to wander to more exotic used machinery (997 GTS anyone?) that my wife could use as a daily and I'm still unlikely loose as much on in depreciation.
I understand the drivers for the engine change (even if I don't necessarily agree with them) and wonder If a new entrant to the brand would care as much about it as we do, but I think this is a real test for Porsche. More than most mass production brands Porsche inspires a loyalty that sees people repeat purchase when new models come out, but reading forum commentary it seems that this change of engine layout is proving a step too far for many.

Having read this report, driven just 300 miles in my 981 Boxster S and as of yesterday, getting into sports plus around the lanes, I have no doubt that my decision was the right one. I actually thought I heard a thunder clap from behind me when I broke at a bend and the gears dropped from 4th to 2nd.
The only doubt that I have on your "road test" is would the 718 have came alive like the 981 had you been in the S model and used Sports plus?
great write up though, Chris Evans with his David Beckham on helium voice had better watch out
and as for the handbrake, I can live with that, it saved me from a close encounter with a skip today
