Data collected so far for 87 cars (9th October 2015).

Here's a couple of bar charts showing which engines and models have sustained a failure:

Total number of failures - 6.9% (Not including the LN as an original failure)
of which 3.4 - 0% and 3.6 - 9.4%
of which all X51 - 0%, C2 - 9.5% and C4S - 11.1%

Last reported failure was July 2014 (not including the LN failure).

Interesting work Alex - well one - but in terms of assessing the chance of any owner experiencing a failure - it would have been even better if you knew how many owners each car had because that then reduces the chances of experiencing a failure by the number of owners as well.

Overall I agree it is a relatively small failure problem and by no means compares with bore scoring (for example).

Baz, are you suggesting bore score is more likely? Whilst not uncommon the general view I have picked up from this forum and the popular Porsche magazines is that it's a pretty small % of 996s that would suffer from this

Bore score on the 996.2 and the 997.1 is collosal compared to ims bearing issues. ALL of them will suffer from it at some point.

Not sure your mileage is correct Stasis. IMS replaced in 2003 at 90k miles? Car purchased in 2008 with 71k miles?

Which dealer was that? I'd love to book my next service with them, assuming they paid for the rebuild!
