Checking the IMS bearing and removing the outer seal

I think it was that line that caused the accident (or that cheap wizz). Must have a word with my man Chalky.

You over generalised Paul when you stated 'some' being good are the exception.

I did not state that - you did!

Alex, bold letters, an exclamation mark and putting it onto the Internet doesn't make it true.

But like I said earlier. All your posts blend into one now such is your self proclaimed expertise in all things technical (see very last point below).

"I made some money running errands"

"she married some newspaper magnate twice her age"

Er, the context you've used 'some' in below clearly implies 'some' is a subset of point '2'. (By all means look up 'subset'.)

Now that followed by the 'Feck em all' rant (do I need to quote that as well?) seems pretty general to me.

And if that wasn't your intention then you need to work on your logic. (Again see point below)

I've started to realise there's 4 types of people who work on these cars:

1.OPC monkeys not trained and capable to do what they're employed to do.
2. Snake oil "specialist" Indies who charge the same as OPC (if not more) due to their 'knowledge & experience' of working on a highly engineered mythical auto-mobile.
3. Your all round intelligent good mechanic (some Indies fall in this bracket).
4. The owners.

Trick is two know who you can trust and who you can't.

Back on track though (but not original topic). There's one thing about someone with a Technical mind (be it mechanic, engineer, etc.) - they can sniff out someone bullshitting they're of the same breed a Fookin' billion light years away!!
[/quote]

What does that even mean? Are you still talking about 'Snake Oil' Indies? Me? Someone else? Santa?

If it's aimed at me, then I presume you're talking about my post musing about the width of the IMSB shaft? The same shaft that Bazhart widened? Are you saying he's talking BS? Or am I talking BS for using 'logic' (having watched your recent activity this really is something you need to look up) for agreeing with him?

Or the source of the flaw? Trying to work out how the organisational decision making unfolded that led to the IMSB design flaw? Cause that was never anything like what I help people be better at doing for a living.......

I have huge respect for those with technical expertise other than mine. But that doesn't exclude me from holding a point of view on them or the work they do.

But am I an expert with a spanner? Of course not! But I'll happily bow to you as the 'King Spanner'

Smell a BS'er? Smell yourself.

Comment in bold wasn't aimed at anyone on here, but my own personal experience in life when someone is try to BS me when they don't know what they're talking about.

You can stick your tongue back in now.

Ho ho ho!! :santa:

Alex, stating there is nothing wrong with doing that job in that way is just silly. Sorry, but you cannot condone shoddy practice in one breath and talk of Indies and shoddy practice the next without expecting comment. Better to acknowledge the obvious and move along.
I've been in engineering for over 30 years but the insight, depth of knowledge and techniques used by my Indy on various models still impresses me. Unit Eleven in Warrington. Best all.

Jeeez - I never stated all Indies were snakesters!! There's a lot of damn good ones out there. There's also alot of slippery ones.

When my car goes pop cos my mechanic is a shoddy workman, I'll buy you all a new Porsche each!!!

(might be a dinky toy version though).

I'd say from your, Ady's and Chris' comments within which there are parts most would have a degree of sympathy with. And I suspect most would agree that being able to share info on Indy's is an important subject.

But it's also a serious and considered one. As in these subjects perception is often confused with reality. Perhaps best left for when there's less 'xmas cheer' in the ether? :thumb:

I've never named a shamed anyone in particular (like some folk do).

I would rather make a list of people that I would use rather than not use as starting to sling mud after the event isn't particularly productive.

Also If you use someone and you are happy with their work and the price they charge then its all good, isnt it.

Who said anything about naming and shaming? :pc:

For example taking Ady's well considered post / idea above, perhaps a thread discussing the matter and how it can be accomplished? :?:

Deffo good suggestion off both you guys, Ady & Paul.

Realistically everything that was in that area was in that area before the cover came off and will continue to be there after as well. Nothing was going to jump into that bearing race the moment the cover came off. Neither did it suddenly become contaminated with a load of stuff it otherwise wouldn't have already been in contact with.

It's a completely moot point for me. Taking that cover off before prepping the area for reassembly hasn't suddenly turned that engine into a grenade and no amount of mystical bearing seeking homing dirt particles are going to make any realistic difference. If there was grime behind the seal, then it's already been through the loop once anyhow.

Update:

Car's over 140k now. IMS bearing has yet to explode. I'm guessing I'm due a new clutch anytime soon as the bite point is rather high on the pedal travel. Brake pipes over the box are also getting rather corroded so I'll have the opportunity to investigate again pretty soon whilst sorting the above 2 jobs.

How time flies
