Heater problem - help needed

Hi all
After a long search I bought a 964 C4 in June. The car is a 1990 manual coupe, with lots of work done but more still needed. The heater is one of the problems and I am looking for advice. It has a mind of its own and sometimes blows hot air instead of cold, but with no obvious pattern.

A first attempt hasn't solved the problem but it turns out that a linkage arm and ball-joint from one of the servo/valves is missing. I'm told that you can't buy them without the servo.

I would like to try to find a linkage before further testing. Does anyone know if the linkages can be bought? Or does anyone have linkage I could buy?

Thanks
Chris

You could try Douglas Valley Breakers as they may sell the servo without the arm given that all the dough is in the servo and not the rod?

Other option try OPC as (virtually) all parts are available from a main dealer from their 'classic parts department'. My guess is the arm is a separate part so it should be available given that the servos are interchangeable dependent on outer fitment and movement range.

You are 'dabbling' with the most complicated heating/ventilation system known to man so its worth having a read of ToreB site to understand it :what:

And 'while your in there' put some lube on the shaft to the two fans as these are £500 a pop and when they start to squeek it can be a slippery slope :nooo:

Chris,

Zingers is spot on with the complexity and the link

http://www.bergvillfx.com/porschehvac2.html

When I first collected my C4 the controls on the dash for the hearter and fans did nothing and the fan 'cycled' randomly , I took the head apart cleaned it then did my best to get some silicon lube into the the various linkages using the page as a guide, I didn't need any parts so I can't help you there sorry.

I didn't find anything obviously wrong with mine, other than a lot of dust build up around the sensor and fan, and some corroded contacts that cleaned up fairly easily

Once back together it does now take some instruction and works well enough that I haven't had another go but it's not particularly powerful and I havnt had a chance to compare it to another 64 so I don't know if that's as good as it gets.

Good luck fella, and allow your self lots of time as it's a bit of a fiddly job

Steve

Thanks for the replies

I'll maybe start with the OPC route. Fingers crossed.

I have read lots on heater problems and the 'most complicated heating/ventilation system known to man' description sounds like a consistent message. Not encouraging.

I've not seen the Tore Bergvill site before so will try digest the bits that I understand.

Loving the car, but not so much my hot feet.

Thanks again

Chris

There are hundreds of posts about the heating systems on line. Most of us have encountered problems of one sort or another. I'm sure you will get to the bottom of it, but if it is anything like mine, it may take a while.
Tore is the heating guru as far as I am concerned.

I wouldn't be rushing to OPC to diagnose this unless the parts you need are obvious and then prepare yourself for a spanking IIRC the CCU is c£2,000 and some of the the other parts are believed to be no longer produced by Porsche :pc:

ToreB is a member on here and if you articulate the faults following his guide I'm sure he will advise. And he can repair some parts as well :thumb:

Unless OPC has mechanics who know this HVAC system I'd personally steer clear and if you give up find a good Indy. You're NE? Malton springs to mind :dont know:

ETA - Just noticed this is an old thread. How did you get on?

Chaps, I beg to differ! The most complicated heating system is in the 928, I think the Porsche engineers had a bit of spare time on there hands

Frazerpart in the wirral (If it turns out to be the unit itself). Mine had a mind of its own too. I'm not sure what magic they worked but they returned it in working order and no issues since.

Chris,

Indy's for the North East are:

D&G Motor Engineers (just round the corner from Porsche at Silverlink)
Tom Fergusson (off South Shore Road, Gateshead)
Redline Racing (in Thornaby)
GMund (in Knaresbrough)
Specialist Cars (in Malton, Yorkshire)
Jamie Nelson (Middlesbrough)

Get yourself out for a drive this Sunday and meet a few other 964 owners. Check the thread in the meets and events section :thumb:
