Dear all Porsche owners and enthusiasts

Finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a used 996. Nothing excites me more than the thought of blasting home after a gruelling day working in an NHS hospital!

Seen a very reasonably priced 04 996 3.6 Carera 2. Mileage is approx 90k. Condition inside and out is great - better than you would expect for an 11 year old car. Service history includes dealer and most recently local indys.

I am definitely no mechanic but car drives smoothly and no evidence of oil patches on drive!

So the question is.....to have a PPI or not? Peter Morgan seems to be on his annual holidays atm.

Also bit concerned about the current entertainment set up. Has the PCM2 (sat nav) non bose system. Would most aftermarket systems be compatible with the wiring set up? I have heard some nightmares people have had with fibre-optic set ups and dont want to run into similar problems.

Look forward to hearing everyones thoughts and suggestions.

I can't help with your ICE query but I'd definitely get the car inspected.

Where is the car based? Someone on here will know of the nearest Indy that'll have a look at it for you and a couple of hundred quid spent might give you some negotiating power on the purchase price or allow you to walk away.

I think your proposed purchase uss the MOST (fibre optic) set up for the PCM and audio.

Definitely have it inspected.

There's plenty of choice around what you want, so take your time, choose the right spec and right condition of car from the outset.

Good luck.

Deffo get it checked for bore-scoring. If not, walk away.

Ideally have it inspected with a borescope (and someone who knows what they are looking at) just for peace of mind.

An 04 car will have the MOST fibre optic loop. Does it have the Sound Package (easy to spot as it will have speakers in the doors)?

It is possible to fit another entertainment system- as you say it is somewhat involved but not as bad as made out. A previous owner fitted an aftermarket unit to mine (although I wish they had not) with some sort of loom which bypasses the MOST. If you want Bluetooth/ipod, then you can get a unit from Dension which will add that to PCM2.

Frankly the 911 is not a great environment for ICE- road/engine noise. I had one with Bose and that was pretty indifferent on the move.

Thanks for the advice

Local Porsche specialist is Porschembri (w. London) who has quoted £360 for full inspection including borescope.

Just need to make the call now.....

Good luck with the purchase.

As other have said, an inspection is worthwhile. Yours sounds quite expensive unless they are coming out to you, but it's money well spent for the peace of mind. Just been through the process myself!
