My Targa has had small leak into the rear N/S seat swab a few times over the last couple of years but it's been nothing to worry about until now, the last couple of weeks I'd noticed water coming in (still only slightly) but a lot more often when it's wet or I wash the car. The heavy rain over the last week has made the seat wet and the carpet underneath so I was in the garage last night trying to see if I can cure the issue, once and for all.
I know there are always a few Targa's leaking out there, so I thought I do a DIY/FAQ on the subject.

Firstly I pulled the side rail curtains away above the B pillar to reveal the drain tubes, it has only ever been the N/S that's leaked but I thought best to check both sides. These just pull out working from the end along and push fit back into its groove when done.

I looked at the tubes and they were both seated fine and still held in with their cable ties, they both have a hard bit of tube inside the rubber drain for strength to allow the cable tie to grip it to its mount, I pulled these hard tubes out and found a blob of crud in the N/S tube which I cleaned out.

I put an electrical screwdriver up the tube to clean as much out as possible, this how much was actually in there, about a pea sized ball when all put altogether.

I have a compressor but I didn't have a narrow enough fitting to blow through the rubber tube so I got a bike pump and piece of heat shrink to make a blowing device which worked clearing any last bits out, did both sides even though no dirt was present in the O/S tube.

I decided to put slightly longer pipes back in the rubber drain to make sure any water went out the B pillar drain like it should and then cable tied it back in its mounting points.

I got some water and saturated the area and nothing came into the car so hopefully that is fixed for a long time to come.

Targa roof leak

Thanks for this, really useful. I have had this problem before and pretty much followed the suggestions. This used to work but more recently didn't so I did further investigations. The water was leaking in at the very bottom of the B pillar right at the back. I had to remove all the carpet, rear shelf and sound deadening. Some days as much as half a litre would come in. I know this because I put s collection system in to catch the water as a temporary measure. Once I had discovered the leak I took it to my specialist who dismantled the mechanism much further than I would have dared. Near the bottom of the B pillar there is an open collection tray which diverts the water from the drain pipes to the main drain which leads down to the rear wheel arch area and outside the car. This collection tray was blocked so the replaced it. No leaks now. It appears that there are several areas for potential blockage and this will probably be an on going process of unblocking to keep the car leak free. The good news is than now I have gone through this process, I know what to do. Hope this helps someone else and thanks again for the original post.

Excellent FAQ and a useful follow up from Andy Neal. As a fellow Targa owner, I shall certainly be checking my drain tubes soon, although I haven't had any water ingress issues to date thankfully!!

Hi, thank you for this, I am having this water problem, the passenger seat carpet and floor well area getting soaked, I found the tube above the pillar which didn't seem to be blocked, it didn't have the plastic tube in though so I put that in, the carpet around the rear wiper motor is also wet, I can see the pipes coming out at the back but they are accessible ? Can you give me a bit more detail on this other pipe, thank you

My rear passenger seat would sometimes get a little puddle forming but the water would also run the length of the roof runner to the rear and get the carpet behind the rear seat wet, which is not ideal as some of the important relays are under that carpet on the passenger side.
