Just bought the 996 C4S do I get the extended warranty?

So as per my other post on buying advice I bough the car today 8)

I am collecting it next week once its MOT'd etc. They are giving me 6 months warranty with the car through Auto Protect. On paper it looks a decent warranty (glossy brochures always look good)

The question is do I extend it unto 1 year for an extra £499? I am pretty tapped out cash wise now after buying it but could swing it. The only thing I am worried about really is an IMS failure. That should be covered on the warranty for 6 months. So do I keep the 500 notes in my pocket and save up another 700ish over the 6 months warranty I have then go of the ultimate Insurance of replacing it with the upgrade ceramic bearing and put it to bed for ever? or pay it and have a year piece of mind then do the upgrade?

Obviously there are other things that can go wrong with the car but I expect some wear and tear items anyway as part and parcel of living with a Porsche.
Not really worried about the nav system and all that jazz.

Beautiful car mate!! Looks mint too!

IMHO - Auto Protect are rubbish and a waste of money. They'll be all nicey nicey on the phone when some thing goes wrong, tell you to take it to somewhere and get the fault diagnosed, then tell you it's not covered under the warranty, oh, and you have to cover all diagnostic costs to be told you're not covered.

2ndly - forget about whatever you've been told about the ceramic bearing - they're rubbish and far inferior to what's already in there. If you want some piece of mind about IMS bearings - do your homework and read loads of stuff on here (like if you do want to make it safer - get access to it, remove the outer dust shield off the bearing so the engine oil lubricates permanently and put it back together with dust sheild removed). Don't think about having someone yank the bearing out without a full engine strip as it can cause even more bother.

All MHO and subject to criticism.

Beautiful car though :thumb:

I did have a proper Google search of them after your post and it seems they may be utter sh@@@

I looked at 4 review sights and one of them gave very good feedback but they other 3 just slated them totally

Think I'll take the 6 months free and then look at the option going forward.

Don't suppose Porsche do anything for older cars do they? It has got 100% full history from them and specialists with no gaps. More than required to be fair

If it were me I'd just bank the money and keep it for the odd repair. The problem I find with warranties on older cars is they always try to pull the 'wear n tear' trick rather than 'mechanical failure'.

Best info. I can give if you don't want sleepless nights is:

1. Get a low temp thermostat fitted as soon as possible (shouldn't cost much).

2. Make sure you keep to you're yearly/12k mile oil changes with the correct oil.

3. At the next available chance of getting access to your IMS cover plate (at a clutch change or new rear main seal fitted), have the bearing inspected for any play and if it's ok (which it should be) have the outer sheild of the bearing removed so that it's lubricated by the engine oil, like so:

after all the research and speaking to Baz at Hartech I decided to inspect the IMS bearing and if it is OK simply remove the seal and leave it.

I filmed a lot of what I did with the IMS and have taken some snaps from that.

My brother helped and took the pictures..

On to the IMS and RMS

I undid the centre nut then removed the three bolts and started to prise out the IMS bearing housing with a couple of screwdrivers

As the housing comes out you can see the seal - it's the later, multi-ribbed type rather then the o-ring of the earlier ones

ready to pull off the shaft

and here is the housing/cover - nothing much to see except that the shape shows that I have the double row IMS bearing fitted

With a small screwdriver I eased off the bearing seal - it came off quite easily

and a decent amount of oil leaked out from behind the bearing seal. I guess the seal wasn't really sealing- which in this case (I think) is good as my IMS bearing has therefore been well lubricated

I cleaned out all the oil from the area of the bearing and checked it as well as I could - absolutely no play and it all looked good

Put the £500 in a "fettling fund", and add some every month to it. I bought my 996 C4S with a 6 month dealer warranty, then decided to keep topping up my fund to cover for any bits that need fixing. My theory was that I'd discover any issues within the 6 months, and get them fixed under warranty. If it was OK and needed nothing within that 6 months, then it was a good'un and I'd be ok.
Try to get your fund up to £2,000, and keep it there. It should keep your car in good fettle without you having to panic every time something needs fixing.
Nice car, btw, you'll fall in love with it very quickly. :thumb: :D
