A cautionary tale of a Geo check

or maybe I was a numpty for not using an OPC or Centre Gravity. (CG is a long way from me) other wise it would have been a no brainer.

....Anyway following some suspension work , top mounts and coffin arms and a set of refurbed alloys with new tyres.

I thought it would be sensible to have a geo done on my car, a C4S.

Following some discussion on a thread some months ago - I think I remember correctly (may have gone wrong here also?) that an indy with a Hunter machine set up should be able to provide the necessary work to a satisfactory standard.

So I went to my local tyre indy - who said no problem - got the car up on the machine, after 20 minutes of set up called me out to show me what would need doing - every wheel was in the red, I wasn't perhaps suprised, and was about to tell them to crack on....when I noticed they had selected the car as a porsche carrera GT!

After quite a long discussion and lots of phoning around by them (apparently they only had a choice of models they knew it wasn't Cayman, Cayenne, Boxster - so they had selected Carrera GT as the car says Carrera C4S across its ar$e -kind of hobsons choice.

I said I wouldn't let them go ahead with that baseline as it wasn't correct, they tried to say it was - and its what they use for alll 911's (they had only ever done a couple - I asked 993, 996, 997? they seemed to think they were all the same - they were all 911's and said carrera  )

Anyway while they were scratching their heads I asked if it was OK for me to go out and have a fiddle with the Hunter software.

I write the stuff (applications software ) for a living, and sure enough, all the 911 models were there including C4S M030 or X74 under a not immediately intuitive menu.

Anyway with the correct baseline loaded a couple of wheels showed to be out, and they seemed very capable at doing the mechanical end of things, I was by now a bit nervous and stayed with them while they were doing it.

Got a nice print out at the end of the process of all the readings everything now in the green.

And the handling is noticably improved.

But I suspect it could have been a very different story..

Anyway as I said a cautionary tale ? you gotta watch'em

:)

You may have come across a post I made highlighting to ensure the correct vehicle is selected from the database. That is the first key step and I always suggest being present with them to take part in the selection of model process from their database.

Good you spotted it!

I recently had a club night at a specialist up on ramps who said I needed a ball joint replacing and potetionally other front suspension work. As I was having 4 new boots on this sum what put a spoke in it. Two months later up on ramps at opc's Leeds for a club meet and free check revealed very minor adjust on one front camber? So it's a mine field out there who to believe. :dont know:

i would like to get mine done, is there a good set up around surrey/north hants ?

Who are the go to guys for chassis tuning in the north west out of curiosity. If you could throw some names out there that people have had good experiences with, that would be appreciated.
The forum gods have been good to me thus far...see no reason not to continue.

According to some any KwikFit

On a serious note the North west "go to" people in my view are Sports and classic or Cath Burrows. :thumb:

I only hear good things about Sport and Classic down in the NW but have no first hand experience other than a very informative phone call about gearboxes.

Speaking of gearboxes, my main man has just taken delivery of a repaired box he is putting back into a 996 C2. Looks like they've done a cracking job.

If I ever need Kevlar clutch packs putting in my tip, I'll have it sent over there.

I've used Nick at Southampton Wheel Alignment Centre for years. Very reasonable price wise and has all the latest kit. That's all he does so knows his stuff. Does loads of high end sportscars, drift/race cars and loads in between. Very happy with his service.
