Advice on potential 944 purchase

Thanks,

I have spoken to the owner of the red one, he is stingy on information though which makes me slightly apprehensive.

Talk to Zingers that sounds a good un, a packet of crisps and a stella artois should be enough commision.

A fair question for me I couldnt live with that interior bad colour poor condition,

it has some rust (which most will have of this age) which again is part of the issue the £3k that it is up for brings you into a wide range of years zingers example being a good one 6 years newer £500 of a difference I also appreciate it comes down to budget.

so its not necessarily a bad car I just dont think its worth 3k nearer 2 for me

good luck with your hunt.

Thanks Gaz,

I've spoken to Zinger and he's letting me know the details of the other one in the morning.

Also told the seller of this car and over the last few hours he's dropped it to £2,300.

Understand what you mean about the interior, though bearing in mind I was looking at ropey range rovers, corsas and 7 series BMW's it's not too bad!

Isn't it funny how you end up looking for a "oh that'll do" car, and then you start dismissing them because you don't like the wheels!? My "no more than £2.5k" sentence to the Mrs might bite me at some point soon!

I was going to buy one a few years back and I was told by a well known Porsche Specialist that they are a 'Money Pit'. Any money you save on cheaper Insurance will be lost if you need to replace a gearbox or engine issues.

I would say remember it's still a Porsche, so parts will be expensive. And I understand parts are getting harder to come by now.

If you are set on getting one I'd say get the very best one you can find.

I would say that an 8 valve 944 is the cheapest to run Porsche of the entire range, especially if you have an interest in doing a little work yourself. You can fix these things with a knife and fork.

I did look at the 928 - but I don't think I like them, can't put my finger on it but I don't think I'd walk up to it and be excited.

The 944 is similar, but has that edge which makes all the difference, despite the fact that it's not a performance orientated car.

I have heard some money pit stories but have heard equal number of stories saying how reasonable they are if you buy well. I'm quite adept with a toolset having replaced clutches, head gaskets and suspension (number times on the BMW!) a few times, and as it's a second car it's not the end of the world if it is off the road for a few weeks.

On another note, is £1k a year maintenance realistic? Was working out costs per year over £5k miles - turns out, including fuel at 25mpg (realistic!?), that it would cost in the region of £800 a year to run including maintenance due to the saving on excess mileage charges on the Mercedes.

Man maths at its best!

Yes but when a Porsche Independant tells me they are a money pit I listen harder, remember he could well be the benefactor of that 'pit' but he steered me clear.

I'd only be looking at the very best 944s now and I'd only be after the later models. Also I'd want to see massive amount of paperwork showing how it's been looked after. Any missing paperwork and I'd walk. I mean a box full of receipts for years of work not a service book only. I'd be looking at cars starting at £3000-3500 and up the others most likely very ropey and near end of life.

I can only give advice based on the 6 944's that I have owned and clocked up over 120,000 miles in . :D

When you are looking at cars for 3k current condition is more important than any other single factor.

Lots of the independents at one time were more concerned that they would start work on these cars and work up a bill in the hundreds which was enough for most owners to throw the towel in back then.

Over and out. :thumb:

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm looking at a few tomorrow (including the ropey one, just for comparison) and am waiting to hear back from Zingari about the other one oop north!

Had a few of these, good cars and shouldn't be expensive to run if you get a good one. Main weak points are cills and the rear of the front wheel arch (front wing) these are getting old now and showing there age but a clean, sorted one will be no worse than any other car.
I think I my mate mentioned selling his a couple of weeks ago, it's a very nice 2.5 lux auto, early oval dash but it's in Newcastle!
Happy hunting.
