Macan S Diesel fails moose test, Porsche promptly responds

Swedish magazine Teknikens Và¤rld has conducted a moose test with a Porsche Macan in S Diesel specification.

Test driver Linus Prà¶jtz says the Porsche Macan preformed strangely during the moose test as the left front wheel locked up during the maneuver. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the moose test, it refers to a car travelling at 43.5 mph (70 km/h) while entering a test area when the driver swerves to the left and then quickly turns to the right.

This wasn't the only time when the Macan behaved this way as the test driver repeated the process several times and obtained the same results. Rather than turning to the right to get back on the correct lane after the second maneuver, the Macan continued straight ahead which means that in real life conditions the vehicle would stay longer on the opposite lane, thus increasing the risk of an accident.

Porsche issued a response saying the left front brake locked as a result of the Active Rollover Protection (ARP) system kicking in (for a maximum of 300 milliseconds) to prevent the Macan from rolling over. Porsche went on to say "the precise, momentary application of brake force to the front wheel at the outside of the bend down to the low slip range minimizes cornering forces to avoid critical or instable driving conditions such as oversteer, rollover or detachment of the tire from the wheel."

Doesn't sound good actually.

Porsche has added its Active Rollover Protection (ARP) system to prevent the vehicle from tipping over, and in doing so, ARP appears to work against the vehicle's/driver's ability to steer around an obstacle in the road. The official Porsche response doesn't seem quite right bearing in mind all its other models pass the so-called "moose test" without issue. :?:
