Greetings all

I am a Porsche newbie looking to buy my first one.

I have been reading tons of threads etc and come to the conclusion that buying a cheap-ish second hand Porche is a total mine field!!

I am looking to spend around 13K on a 911 but as I don't know much about them I don't want to go down the ebay - auto trader route and end up with a dog that will need a new engine when I get it home which will ruin the whole experience for me.

I am based in the Leeds area and was wondering if anyone knows of a car that fits my criteria? I have read enough to know that I need to get a PPI done. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of a car that is currently being sold or a local reputable dealer who has some stock I can take a look at?

Cheers All

It's absolutely possible to find incredible 911s for the same money as a hatchback, there are plenty of people with 996 Carreras of 1999-2001 vintage on this forum who have great cars that give them nothing but miles of smiles.

On the other hand, there are certainly going to be cars out there that have been tarted up and sold with a warranty that isn't fit for purpose that may well have major problems lurking that to fix could be as expensive as what you pay for the car in the first place. A really good idea is to buy within your budget as even the best cars will still need money spent on consumables and also modifications and improvements to make it perfect, for you. You probably ought to think in terms of £2-3k in your first year and £1-2k thereafter for this.

Anyway, you've taken a very good first step, there will be people familiar with that marketplace along soon to share their knowledge and experience. Buying any 15 year old car with a fair few miles under its belt needs to be done eyes open, if its a 911, a proper sports car that could have cost £60-70k new needs even more diligence.

If it were me in your place, I'd scan Porsche for Sale section http://911uk.com/adverts.php of this forum (there are a few in your price area). The perfect sale in my opinion would be from a forum member/genuine enthusiast who has looked after the car and has the history file of services and bills to prove it and has no problem with you organising a PPI. If you come across a sale like that, everybody comes out of it well.

Within the trade, there are plenty of excellent specialists, many of them are sponsors of this site http://911uk.com/template.php?page=28, it would be worth finding who is nearer to you and checking their stock.

Finally, people are more than happy to comment on any cars that you like the look of if you post links to them on here.

Good luck! :thumb:

Thanks for the response MJA

That is pretty much what I am after, a well loved car from a enthusiast or a reputable dealer. I will keep my eyes open for cars that meet the criteria

I bought mine from Strasse just outside Leeds City Centre.

I would have no problem recommending them, they sell cars they know / have serviced which they buy from customers (no SOR) or they can so inspections for you.

ps they self warranty the cars (not third party) which I took advantage of no problems ;-)

Worth calling around and having a chat with them as they can keep an eye out for you etc.....

Hi Jon

I rang them earlier and they seem a helpful bunch. Nothing in stock at the min that suits what I am after

I like the speed yellow 993 cab they've got at Strasse, showed my wife and she said first, stop wasting time looking at car ads and second, it was grounds for divorce for me to buy a car in such a colour :x

993's are gorgeous in speed yellow, I was very close to buying a speed yellow targa at one point
