Key programming

Hi all,

I had to have a new security module on my 996 convertible due to a water leak caused by a Porsche specialist not unblocking the rear drains properly

The new module was installed by another company who programmed the existing key to it but didn't mention (and I didn't think of it) to bring the second key with the car. As a result, my second key won't start the car. I understand that to add the key I need a key serial number - does anyone know how you can get that from an existing key or is that not correct?

Thanks for looking and any advice is very much appreciated

I have been told that you can't reprogramme a new or existing key to the car unless the key comes with the serial number, which is only on the tag that comes with the key.

How did the company that coded your first key do it - can they not recode your spare key?

...you'll definitely need to buy a new key head from Porsche; this will come with the 16 digit serial number required to program the key to the car...£215 plus vat at my opc recently

Oh and then you'll need either Porsche or a specialist to do the programming
