Heater Booster Diaphragm Thingy! Leaking

I have got a leaky Diaphragm!

Question what exactly does the diaphragm do and how necessary is it?

Does it affect cooling the car's engine and keeping temperatures down in any way e.g. taking heat away from the engine or exhaust or is it just for supplying heat into the vehicle to keep your feet toasty?

My only reason for asking is I have seen that you can kind of bypass this heater blower like the RS model does and get a tricky-looking carbon replacement from D911 which apparently still gives heat into the car when required!

Please educate me as I'm dumb!

Cheers

This is the air intake actuator that selects the upper snorkel intake when you reverse to avoid exhaust fumes in the cabin. See bottom of this page for details:

I never advise removing the rear fan, it is important for transporting heated air to the cabin, as well as cooling of the engine.
See the same web page, chapter Rear AUX fan for details.
Cheers,
