Hi

Am looking at a 2005 997.1 to potentially buy and there is what appears to be the engine number on the build sticker in the service book, which reads

M9605-696 G9701 - 10

Is this the engine number as trying to work out if the car has the smaller or larger IMS bearing?
From what I've read the IMS changeover was from number M96/05 69507475 onwards, but my number appears to have a G" in it?

Is this right, comments appreciated

Othewise, very keen on the car !

mine had exactly the same number in the book, so I suggest it's engine type rather than the engine number.

Yes, that makes sense now, thanks

I have a 2005 997 and mine has the larger ims bearing. I had to clean up the number stamp on the crankcase to get the number.

Mine was registered in September 2005.

An engine number ending in 07475 or later is correct as it's a M96/05 3.6.

If it was a M97 (3.8 S car) the one you want should end in 09790 or later.

The "G9701" part of that number is the gearbox code. That's a 6 speed manual on a RWD car.

Hi Guys - just looking at a MY2005 (October registered) 3.6 it has an engine number of 69604180 - this means it has the later revised bearing?

Engine no 69507476 onwards is the bigger IMS. Are you sure your engine no. is correct? as it seems very high. If it is correct then you have the larger IMS.

Yes. That’s the one that comes up on the HPI check.

The owners manual gives - M9605-696 G9701 - 10

I think the number above is the Gearbox number with a "G" in it. The only sure way is to get under the engine a read the number stamped into the casing.

The third digit (6) denotes that it was a Model Year 2006 car, which it would be if it was manufactured after September 2005. The October registration confirms this.

04180 denotes that it has the 4,180th 3.6 engine fitted in that model year out of around 8.5k 3.6 engined cars produced in MY2006.
