Cayenne diesel - engine won''t start :(

I have an issue with my 3.0D cayenne 958 (125K miles). I know that this issue can't be diagnosed over the internet, but hopefully someone can explain to me if there are any other possible causes than the dreaded 'catastrophic" HPFP failure (expensive fix)

- On wednesday I filled car up with a full tank of diesel (was nearly empty)
- The car is running fine, 30 miles later, I get a flashing Glow plug light and reduced power, pulled over re-started and light has gone, come back on when I get over 2K revs. This time both the glow plug light and CEL come on. I continue on limp mode to my destination - another 20 miles
- On the return journey, I start the car and just the CEL is lit until I get on the motorway and get over 2K revs and the flashing plug light comes back on, car is in limp mode again.
- I went to start up the car today to change the fuel filter (on the off chance it needed doing) and it started then immediately dies. I push it to the side of the road. The engine spins freely but doesn't fire up.
- I changed the fuel filter, which was dirty, but has had no impact.

Other considerations, I've noticed a slight vibration between 800-1000 RPM / idle over the last few months (felt through the seat) it felt slightly more intense (but still mild) during the start-up on Wednesday. I'm not sure if I was just 'hyper aware" and therefore this may be unrelated. In all cases the vibration went away above 1K RPM.

I've got the car booked in at a diesel specialist on Wednesday so ultimately I will find out for sure then.

Until then, can anyone offer up any possible issues other than the HPFP that might be causing this? More to put my mind at ease than anything else.

Thanks in advance.

As this problem occurred shortly after filling up with fuel, I would suggest starting by checking the fuel itself for contamination.

Will do, I did think that due to the current situation, maybe the diesel has been sitting for a while?

Since I filled the entire tank, and have a card reciept, hopefully I should be in a good position to claim back the cost from the garage if I can prove that contaminated fuel is the culprit.

Hey markz86,

I literally had exactly this scenario today in my 958 3L diesel, and had been having occasional vibrations through the seat over the last 2-3 months!

Can you confirm root cause/fix?

Cheers !
